Dowland's three Bookes of Songes (1597, 1600, 1603) and A Pilgrimes Solace (1612) form an unexcelled repository of English lute-song, a rich genre to which they are centrally important. Some of the songs have become familiar on record over the last quarter-century but the only complete recordings were those of the Bookes of Songes and A Pilgrimes Solace by The Consort of Musicke on L'Oiseau-Lyre (nla). The cupboard, though not at present bare, is not too abundantly stocked for contributions to be gratefully received, and certainly not when they are of this quality. All four collections are represented and if some of the selected songs (less than one quarter of those available) are now well known, there are just as many that lack any other recording on CD, including all those from A Pilgrimes Solace. Two extremes are not unknown in performances of these songs: detachment, in time and from emotion, and excessive 'theatrical' involvement, neither of which does them justice. Though there are passing moments when he seems to sacrifice a little of expressive force at the altar of bel canto, Rogers surely a desert island voice in the early-musical field, strikes the happiest of mediums.
The songs embrace the gamut of Dowland's moods, from dark to bright, and Rogers's realization of it brought to my mind a comment of Ton Koopman: ''When Scarlatti is happy I must be happy, and when Bach is sad I must be sad too.'' There have been fine recitals of this kind before, but I can recollect none in which the singer embellishes his lines so freely and fitly as Rogers does throughout. O'Dette is the most responsive of accompanists, as he is fully equipped to be, and is recorded at a level that reveals the textural partnership these songs represent. The recording is so immediate that Rogers's every intake of breath is audible, as are also, thanks to his excellent diction the words—printed in full in the booklet. Buy this—and be glad to have the chance.'
