Author: John Duarte
The songs embrace the gamut of Dowland's moods, from dark to bright, and Rogers's realization of it brought to my mind a comment of Ton Koopman: ''When Scarlatti is happy I must be happy, and when Bach is sad I must be sad too.'' There have been fine recitals of this kind before, but I can recollect none in which the singer embellishes his lines so freely and fitly as Rogers does throughout. O'Dette is the most responsive of accompanists, as he is fully equipped to be, and is recorded at a level that reveals the textural partnership these songs represent. The recording is so immediate that Rogers's every intake of breath is audible, as are also, thanks to his excellent diction the words—printed in full in the booklet. Buy this—and be glad to have the chance.'
