I found little to choose between the sound of the LP, the balance and quality of which RF thought splendid, and the CD version. The LP is admirably clear with a fine perspective and yields nothing to the CD in matters of clarity. The trumpets and drums sound radiant and vigorous, respectively in both versions; perhaps there is marginally more definition in the CD but certainly not enough to affect one's enjoyment. I never used to care much for this work but I realize now that I was too ready to form an opinion on the basis of a turgid performance which I heard some 20 years ago.
Not vintage Handel, perhaps, but the music breathes energy and fire under Simon Preston's baton. Choir, orchestra and soloists together make a strong team. Recommended.'
