Author:
The best item here is Pinchas Zukerman's beautifully played, highly sympathetic performance of The lark ascending. Neil Black gives a capable performance of the Oboe Concerto, but he doesn't achieve the greatest heights in terms of tone quality or distinction of phrase. The purely orchestral contributions are somewhat variable. Greensleeves is rather heavily played, and both the Walton pieces are too slow in tempo, the second especially so. Barenboim conducts Delius in a slightly uncomfortable fashion, and clearly he isn't quite at home in the music's style. The First cuckoo comes off quite well, but it doesn't quite flow as it should. The first of the two Aquarelles drags a little, but the second is lively enough, and in the difficult Summer night on the river Barenboim sensibly maintains a strong rhythmic pulse and moves the music along quite swiftly. The only real failure is the Fennimore and Gerda Intermezzo, which is painfully slow. Recordings are vivid and sometimes even a little too overblown.'
