Author:
This programme of ten Debussy pieces is something of a hotch-potch. I get the feeling that the coming together of the principals for the Flute, Viola and Harp Trio was seized upon as an opportunity to issue this major work with the Danse sacree et danse profane plus eight shorter fill-up items. Nevertheless, the disc achieves a unified feel because Debussy's impressionistic musical language so perfectly suits James Galway's flute (and Marisa Robles's harp) and by the fact that the items make up almost everybody's idea of the essential Debussy. The unaccompanied flute solo Syrinx is quite beautifully played, as is the Trio. The items in which James Galway directs the Chamber Orchestra of Europe—in his own arrangements—as well as playing the flute, do sound slightly odd if we recollect their original formats. However, this sweet-sounding assemblage—recorded in a pleasantly open acoustic—will please the many fans who have already acquired some of the half-dozen Galway albums on the RCA Compact Disc list.'
