Saint-Saëns’s First Sonata, the finer of the two he wrote, is similarly given a winning performance, with the characteristic structure of four movements in pairs cleanly brought out and the contrasts well established. The popular Méditation from Massenet’s Thaïs comes in a beautifully judged performance, not too slow, and with magical half-tones from Rimonda’s violin making a welcome filler. At just under an hour of music this may not be a generous disc but it is an exceptionally attractive one.
