As in the so-called Grand Concerto—No. 2 in F minor—which she recorded earlier for Hyperion (A66088, 12/83; CD CDA66088, 8/85). Thea King makes a wonderfully persuasive advocate for this clarinettist composer. As MM pointed out in his original review of the LP, Crusell was strangely reticent over display in not asking for cadenzas, except for one very brief one which he wrote out himself. Even so, the writing so beautifully fits the instrument that it must be a delight to play, with plenty of display passages of a more reticent kind, and with brief lyrical slow movements in each concerto leading to jaunty finales. When Thea King's companion record coupling the Grand Concerto with the Weber No. 2 has already appeared on CD, it is good to have this equally desirable recording on CD too, with added realism and presence given in the new medium and with the soloist more firmly placed in front of the warmly recorded orchestra.'
