Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri patientis sanctissima is a cycle of seven cantatas, each one of which is an address to a different Member of the Body of Christ crucified, implicit in the work’s title. The seven pieces follow a typical layout of the north German cantata before Bach, consisting of a terse introductory instrumental “Sonata”, a “Concerto” for vocal ensemble, an aria whose strophes are variously treated with contrasting solo elements, and an ensemble da capo. There is nothing either haphazard or left to chance in Buxtehude’s skilfully and affectingly wrought sequence, whose pervasive sense of unity is achieved both by thematic relationships and cross-referencing within each cantata, as well as by the highly charged emotions of the texts and the composer’s unfailingly effective illustration of them.
Buxtehude’s Membra Jesu nostri has been well represented on the Gramophone Database for several years with no fewer than four rival versions preceding this one. The newcomer, performed by Bach Collegium Japan under its director, Masaaki Suzuki, offers an impressive addition. Indeed, in respect of ensemble and expressive gravitas it is, perhaps, the most convincing of them all but, for me, the pleasure of this deeply felt reading is diluted by too reverberant an acoustic. If I were present in such a building and able to sense other aspects of its ambience I might feel differently. But I am not and, in the context of a CD, would like to hear more detail, above all from the string instruments. Even so, there is no mistaking the technical skill and sensibility with which these artists have realized the tender, agonized suspensions and expressive power of these beautiful pieces. Only the intimacy of the music suffers and this may not bother some listeners as much as it troubles me. The solo vocal contributions are almost uniformly strong, and there are electrifying moments in the ensemble singing as, for example, in the limpid, perfectly balanced textures of the “Ad ubera portabimini” which concludes the second cantata of the cycle. Notwithstanding reservations, this version is on balance my first recommendation, though readers can also confidently choose between a recent Naxos release of the work, or another recent re-release on the Erato reissue with Ton Koopman.'
