The coupling of the Ashkenazy/Decca CD, namely the three impromptus and the Fantaisie-Impromptu, may be somewhat more compelling than on the Philips, and I think that Bella Davidovich has played the Barcarolle better elsewhere. Here this masterpiece sounds slightly bound by the sonority of the instrument. The previously unreleased performance of the Rondo is pleasing, though not so compact as it might have been, with the pianist underlining harmonic twists to the detriment of structure. The piano is not well maintained in this item, nor ideally so in some of the later Preludes.
Ashkenazy is the more consistently satisfying in the Preludes, though Davidovich has her strengths. She treats each one with the greatest care, rather than pursuing any sort of continuity in the set, such as one sometimes hears in concert. Her approach is direct and unencumbered by mannerism. These are strong and considered performances, rather than being especially lively, and yet in the F minor, No. 18 she is able to shape the unison writing with a declamatory style that is about the most effective I have heard. Throughout the disc the piano sound is full-blooded and rather over-mellow. Both Ashkenazy and Davidovich are mature players who know what they are doing, and each can be firmly recommended.'
