Vol 4 of Eugéne Mursky’s Chopin cycle consists of the complete Etudes, thankfully including the Trois Nouvelles Etudes which form an expressive pendant to the Op 10 and 25 sets. Crossing the Rubicon from pragmatism to poetry and transforming each study into a tone-poem of the highest quality is a supreme test of musicianship, and although Mursky is able he is rarely remarkable. In his safe hands (no small accomplishment given Chopin’s savagely concentrated demands) the course of each Etude is made predictable rather than a journey of novel and, indeed, breathtaking surprises.

He lacks the vitality and poetic “lift” of the finest Chopin pianists and although there are relative successes in Op 10 No 1, played with plenty of variety rather than a more familiar wintry and uniform blast, and in Op 25 No 3 where he warms to the music’s giocoso character, he misses too much of Op 10 No 6’s darkness and morbidity. Technically his opening to Op 10 No 12 is hardly of the finest while his way with Op 25 No 1 would hardly have prompted Schumann’s famous tribute (“imagine an Aeolian harp…”). In Op 25 No 12 Mursky realises much of the music’s sweep and breadth but, more generally, his studies remain studies. He has been well recorded with admirable breathing-space between each Etude, but there is little comparison with legendary discs by Cortot, Ashkenazy (his early Russian recording), Pollini, Anievas and, more recently, Murray Perahia.
