If you came across these CDs in the racks and turned them over you might find the diversity of repertory bewildering – or perhaps attractive – but, whatever your taste, they are actually more interesting than simply calling-cards for yet another gifted young pianist. When Gianluca Cascioli received First Prize at the Umberto Micheli International Piano Competition in Milan in 1994 he was only 15. The jury included Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Charles Rosen, Louis Lortie and Maurizio Pollini, among other luminaries, and it was indeed a competition to stand out from the general run in that it required the participants to demonstrate a breadth of ability by performing in each round a work by Beethoven as well as several demanding modern works. Pierre Boulez wrote Incises specially for the competition, and in a note in the booklet to the CD which includes it he commends Cascioli as an exceptional talent.
The musical personality is already persuasive. The contents of the discs may appear to be bits and bobs, but in fact each is rather well planned and you may find yourself listening through to the greater part of them in sequence, as I did, one track encouraging continuation with the next. The list of items may look like clever stuff but Cascioli has much to say about everything he plays. And there is something very likeable about his style: not at all didactic or over-insistent but inviting, unforced, sharing. There’s a feeling for phrase and harmonic shapes and a natural warmth that make the business of communication seem an easy affair. And always such good sound! Someone should have advised him though that, for a recording, pauses within a piece need to be shorter than in the concert-hall (in the Bach-Busoni Toccata and Fugue, for example, and between some of the sections of the Beethoven Fantasia). Nor are the Beethoven Bagatelles uniformly successful – the first is too slow. But neither CD prompts a tally of reservations, and against my expectations I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the avowedly more ‘popular’ second one. So I’m not inclined to recommend one over the other. The Hamburg studio recordings are first-class.
Another Pollini in the making, or at any rate a pianist in a not dissimilar mould? Do hear him.'
