Author: Nicholas Anderson
Provencal, Andre Campra is one of the most constantly rewarding composers who were active during the half-century or so between the death of Lully and the performance of Rameau’s first opera in 1733. Campra was equally at home in the spheres of secular and sacred music, as his tragedies lyriques, operas-ballets – in which he played a pioneering role – grands motets and petits motets testify. This new release features a selection from the last-mentioned category, in which one or sometimes two voices are accompanied by continuo with a small number of melody instruments. The pieces have been chosen from Campra’s two earliest collections, dating from 1695 and 1699.
The three vocal ranges represented here are soprano, high tenor and bass. I enjoyed the singing by and large, especially, perhaps, that of Peter Harvey, who sounds the most comfortable in the French idiom of the time. But all three make lively contributions, bringing out both Campra’s gift in contemplative writing and his ability to enliven the Latin texts with harmonic radiance and expressive fervour. The instrumental support is fluent and sympathetic to the vocal declamation, though there are occasional moments of insecurity in the violin playing. But it is a pity that the booklet is short on useful detail concerning the vocal and instrumental resources for each piece. Of course, it all becomes clear when you listen to each track, but some kind of indication of what colours and textures are brought to bear on an individual motet would have been helpful to say the least. That apart, the programme can be confidently commended. Readers may find occasional duplications from other recordings, but one of the loveliest items here, O Jesu amantissime has not been available, to the best of my knowledge, for a great many years.'
