Thinking of Anton Bruckner, piano music may not be the first thing that comes to mind. There are nevertheless a handful of works for the piano, written between 1850 and 1868, most of which are included here.

The four Lancier Quadrilles, among the earliest of these pieces, are given jolly, thoroughly danceable performances of considerable charm. Of the other dance forms on the disc, the G major Minuet and Trio is a self-conscious antique in the loveliest 18th-century style, while the two Waltzes are of a carefree gaiety and insouciance not usually associated with the provincial Bruckner. Kodama imbues the C major Polka and A minor Mazurka with the full measure of their nationalist origins, while the Steiermärker is redolent of its rich folk origins in Styria, with irresistible yodelling effects. The character pieces, Quiet Contemplation on an Autumn Evening and Memory showcase Kodama’s cultivated lyric cantabile, beguiling in its simplicity.

To Kodama’s great credit, she seeks out the subtle beauties of this music, resorting neither to overstatement nor to an assumed naivety. Her clarity of touch and unfailing kinaesthetic sense are a pleasure to experience.
