Brilliantly accomplished performances from this ever-perceptive husband-and-wife duo, and a fascinating programme too, including valuable world premiere recordings of Britten’s own (unused) piano-duet version of the Paul Bunyan Overture, the resourceful and mischievous Two Lullabies written in 1936 for use in a BBC audition (‘Vile pianos, and gloomy atmosphere’, the composer later recalled) and Colin McPhee’s effective two-piano transcription from 1942 of the masterly Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge. Strongly recommended.'
