Author: Andrew Achenbach
Both the Eighth and New World show the inimitable Halle/Barbirolli partnership at its most inspirationally fresh, and the enormously characterful reading of the mighty Seventh is very nearly as special. Here is truly life-enhancing, hugely spontaneous music-making which easily triumphs over the comparatively dated 1957-9 sonics. Lovely fill-ups, but with one serious caveat: the much-loved Campoli/Navarra Brahms Double Concerto is shorn of its last two movements – an unpardonable blunder which I trust will be rectified in future pressings. Otherwise, unbridled pleasure guaranteed.'
