A robust reading of the first of the swansong Sonatas traces the progression from Allegro appassionato opening to Vivace finale with persuasively vigorous bite, the autumnal E flat equally taken at face value; relaxed, introspective, the gentlest hint of youthful passion. Darker than expected tones in the occasionally overstated Op. 91 alto songs may surprise some, not wholly convince others. Characterful piano playing throughout from Westenholz.'
