Generally reliable music-making that smacks of careful preparation but lacks excitement. Tempos tend to the slow side (there is nothing brillante about the Allegro of the Quintet) and in the Brahms in particular the string tuning is not entirely infallible. With so much competition in the catalogue, this slightly curious coupling is not competitive. '
