On this showing, the Mandelring Quartet are a gifted, wonderfully homogeneous young group who radiate an easy virtuosity and relaxed joy, and their partnership with the 42-year-old Tallinn-born pianist, Kalle Randalu, brings plenty to admire. If the first two movements of the Brahms may strike some listeners as a mite too unassertive and lacking something in crackling flair and intensity, there can be no complaints about the remainder, while the present account of the Franck strikes a perceptive balance between tender nobility and thrusting ardour. The glowing sound emanates from the studios of Radio Bremen.'
