The death of Glenn Gould in October 1982 robbed the gramophone (using the word generically to cover LP, CD and cassette) of one of its most dedicated and truth-seeking artists. In effect, the pianist had withdrawn from live recitals and his concentration on recording—the sound as well as the music—was total. His recordings of Bach make compulsive and yet idiosyncratically tantalizing listening. As for this Brahms disc, our reviewer JOC felt that it explored the anatomy of the pieces rather than their soul. On the plus side, the recorded quality is technically splendid and dynamics are realistically wide (do not set your volume control too high at the beginning) and the unwanted vocal effects are not obtrusive. This CD must be one of the most successful CBS issues to date.'
