<These three Czech works, composed between 1949 and 1961, combine unsentimentality and rhythmic volatility with a distinctive national voice. Pavel Borkovec was a pupil of Suk, and his Second Piano Concerto is often driven and percussive, although there is a strong lyrical vein too. The Moravian composer Klement Slavický builds on a theme of Moravian folk characteristics in his impressive and varied Rhapsodic Variations for orchestra, tracing the structural outline of a traditional four-movement symphony. The Piano Concerto of Petr Eben, a pupil of Borkovec, is a more brittle and aggressive work. All three performances are vivid and committed, especially Antonin Jemelik's commanding account of the Borkovec.
