Of the six works comprising Bernstein’s entire piano output, no less than four are sets of Anniversaries – touching, characteristically humane miniatures (all 29 of them), inspired by friends and family across some four-and-a-half decades. The impressive Piano Sonata dates from 1938 when Bernstein was still a Harvard undergraduate, while the nine-minute Touches was written in 1981 as a test-piece for the Van Cliburn Competition. Alexander Frey proves an intensely persuasive interpreter. Very well engineered. '
