Robert Holl's grave, imposing bass-baritone is most effectively heard here in the more declamatory and dramatic songs, notably Beethoven's Gellert settings and An die Hoffnung, and Haydn's wryly humorous An die Faulheit. Elsewhere, though, he misses the rapture and abandon of Beethoven's Maiengesang and the ingenuous charm of Haydn's Ein kleines Haus, while Mozart's Abendempfindung, always something of a litmus test, exposes some distinctly lumpy legato. David Lutz is a supportive accompanist.'
