One does not usually fancy that it would be seemly or even thinkable to nod to Beethoven in the street, supposing that time and place permitted. But hearing these arrangements is like looking over his shoulder as he works. At his least forbidding here, he smiles, sings to himself and from time to time gets up to dance. The work is incidental, its scope, aspirations and rewards all strictly limited. It comes mostly from Scotland, from Herr Thomson, who tends to ask for a song without words: that is, he sends the tune he wants arranged for voice (or voices) and piano trio but regrets that the lyrics are not yet available. A pity, but the melodies are such charmers, have such unassuming strength and grace, that their arrival is like that of good company: wholesome stimulants of a composer's wit and skill, his heart too.
Beethoven wrote 140 such arrangements, and here are 29 of them, each one a delight. The absence of words (if indeed George Thomson did fail to provide them on these occasions as on others) seems not to have constituted much of a drawback: sometimes the accompaniment takes an odd form, as with the clip-clop of Sally in our Alley or the rollicking energy of Enchantress, farewell, but there are happy chances too, such as the sympathetically sighing phrases of the instruments in I'll praise the Saints which, though nominally a song of rejoicing, tells also of anxious prayers. Usually it is some rhythmic figure in the melody that gets him going (O Charlie is my darling for instance) and then he adds syncopations of his own and alternating piano and forte figures till his studio is peopled with dancers and drinkers, ''light in the eye and a song in the air''.
The performances are excellent: good singing and playing by all concerned, and though we may not have expected to find Josef MacProtschka among them he is welcome none the less. Texts are provided, and German translations to which (''er schiesst sich tot'' being easier than ''lowpin o'er a lim'') one sometimes turns for enlightenment. The record is the most genial of musical companions, and none but the grumpy heart will want to miss it.'
