Author: Richard Wigmore
Other groups may show more temperament in the combustible C minor Trio from Op. 1. But the Guarneri Trio gives a thoughtful, sympathetic reading, with well-judged internal balance and a keen sense of give-and-take between the instruments. If the cello solo at the start of Op. 11’s Adagio is a touch stiff, the outer movements are elegantly pointed, with liquid clarinet playing from Pascal Moragues; and there is plenty of character in the witty, inventive Variations, Op. 121a. Not quite a front runner, but worth considering if you want these three works on a single disc.'
