Beethoven's two substantial pieces for wind ensemble, the Op. 71 Sextet and the Op. 103 Octet (early in spite of the opus number) are supplemented here by the charming Rondino and the odd little Quintet for oboe, bassoon and three horns. These performances impressed me on LP last summer, now they sound still crisper and clearer in CD format—there is some brilliant clarinet playing in the Sextet, much lively and deft ensemble work in the Octet. Most of the music is taken at quite brisk tempos, even the Rondino, which benefits from the absence of sentimental dawdling. Altogether a persuasive disc, in which some lesser Beethoven is done with plenty of panache and style.'
