A charming collection, embracing such stylistically diverse offerings as the sparkling Valse-Caprice from 1889 (with which the 21-year-old composer-pianist first wowed the Boston musical public), a wistfully intimate lament entitled A Cradle Song of the Lonely Mother (1924) and the slumbering, Lisztian bravura of the Op. 81 Prelude and Fugue (1912). The early Op. 6 Ballad is another well-made affair, while The Fair Hills of Eire, O! (1922) touchingly embroiders that eponymous Irish melody. Joanne Polk proves an assured, eloquent advocate, and her unfailingly perceptive efforts have been very well recorded.'
