Of the six works here by the Basque composer Usandizaga (who died at the tragically early age of 28), the elegant Suite, the short descriptive Dans la mer and the Symphonic Overture (obsessed with a Gregorian fragment), all written at the age of 17, reflect the influence of his French training under Vincent d’Indy. These prentice efforts were followed, when he returned home freed from this discipline, by works of nationalist or exotic inspiration that show an imaginative ear for instrumentation: by far the most impressive is the eloquent and expertly written cello Fantasy, here with a fine soloist.'
