What this recital reports, basically, is an East-European musical tradition, from the folk-inspired forays in Mahler’s Wunderhorn settings (where Yiddish musical asides murmur beneath the surface) to the mysticism of Lutos?awski’s entrancing Five Songs (1956?57). The various narratives, yearning cadences and bouts of humour that surface time and again are rendered all the more vivid by soprano Salomé Haller, not a great voice in the classic sense of the term (she sounds strongest in the mid-high registers) but a good singer with an ear for a yarn and an ability to colour and project all manner of musical styles. Which in this context embrace, in addition to the Mahler (here sounding more than ever like Eastern-tinted Schubert), a very Russian-sounding Tchaikovsky sequence, beautifully characterised, and Bartók’s peppery Five Village Scenes, three of which were later orchestrated. Haller and her excellent pianist Nicolas Kruger hold the tension in Bartók’s haunting “Berceuse” (one of the great 20th-century concert songs), both artists bringing the music’s exotic roster of harmonic shades into focus. In less sensitive hands Brahms’s Zigeunerlieder can sound overbearing – I recall a long-deleted version by Christa Ludwig and Bernstein where the piano introduction sounded like Bartók’s Out of Doors – but here a combination of varied vocal delivery and lightly sprung piano-playing makes for a delightful encounter. Those same admirable qualities enhance Janá?ek’s Moravian Popular Songs which are sung, as are all the selections, in the composer’s native language. The recorded balance is excellent and Krüger’s piano tone is bright without sounding brittle. Full texts and translations are included.
