This is Simon Preston's second Bach recording from Soro Abbey and I, for one, could not be more delighted. It's an instrument I can never tire of hearing, especially when recorded as well as this. The DG engineers have set the organ in an ideal perspective with just enough atmosphere to give the recording real warmth while preserving the intimate clarity of each individual stop. On sheer organ sound alone this is a disc well worth having.
But, of course, there's much more to it than that. His earlier recording (3/91) was of the large-scale partitas. Here Preston has tackled the Orgelbuchlein, a collection of 46 chorale preludes (the second version of Liebster Jesu, BWV634 is omitted from this disc) intended as instruction pieces in the art of both arranging chorales and securing a sound pedalling technique. The preludes are short—the longest at three minutes, Christ ist erstanden, is divided into three distinct verses—so there can be a tendency for them to sound like short sound-bites when heard in close succession. By intelligent choice of tempo (including a quite startlingly vivacious speed forErstanden ist der heil'ge Christ), ingeniously thought out registrations with very little duplication between preludes, and clever organization of the gaps between the preludes (which are grouped in sequence to follow the Church's year, much in the fashion of a hymn book) the overall impression is of a well-paced, easy-flowing musical journey which is propelled by such variety rather than obstructed by it.
Preston's performances are thoroughly rewarding. The clarity of detail, as in the bubblyHerr Gott, der ein'ge Gottes Sohn is exemplary and the wonderful ease with which the melodic lines in the more reflective preludes, like Wenn wir in hochsten Noten sein, unfold is sheer joy to hear. I do have reservations. His almost obsessive avoidance of anything approaching a legato tone does irritate and in places seems to destroy the shape of the prelude; I find Komm, Gott Schopfer, heiliger Geist in particular uncomfortably jagged, and certainly with such vehement staccato playing the canon of Erscheinen ist der herrliche Tag is lost. But taken as a whole this is an outstanding performance of the Orgelbuchlein enhanced by a first-rate recording.'
