Neat, well-paced performances in good recorded sound – though these early Bach works are chiefly of historical interest

Fifteen years ago the existence of the Neumeister Collection – a compendium of 82 organ chorale preludes including 38 by J S Bach – was made known to the world by Christoph Wolff, who had unearthed it in the library of Yale University. Of those 38 preludes, seven were already known (although for reasons that are not immediately apparent, three of those are excluded from this release) and one, BWV1096, has since been attributed to Pachelbel and is also excluded here.
These are early examples of Bach’s work and, as such, are of rather more historic than musical interest. Appropriately, Kay Johannsen has unearthed a truly historic organ for this recording. Completed in 1730 and housed in a church just 25 miles east of Bach’s birthplace, it is the largest surviving Thuringian organ of Bach’s time, and if he never actually played it he certainly knew the work of its builder well. Johannsen has mapped out his registrations in great detail (a feature of Hanssler’s epic Bach edition has been the impressive accompanying documentation, and this release is no exception – the booklet alone makes this an invaluable release), so we can see how meticulously he has chosen his stops. I must say, however, that such detail is rather more apparent to the eye than the ear – for all its charm this instrument is hardly shown as the most colourful or varied of Bach’s time.
The performances are neat, precise, unpretentious and ideally paced, and the recording is suitably intimate.'
