One good reason to want this disc is the clear, beautifully balanced and vernally fresh playing of the Mozart; another is the fact that this is the only version currently available on CD. There are other performances of the reconstructed Bach Concerto on CD, notably that by The English Concert (Archiv Produktion) and, as MM noted in his original review, D minor might have been a better key than the C minor we have here, but this is a very acceptable performance—and one is aware of the matter of the key more on paper than in terms of discomfort, so able is the oboist in particular. The weak link is the Vivaldi: the central Largo e cantabile, requiring only continuo support, is most sensitive and in-scale, but the outer movements suffer the effects of inflation. It has, however, no present competition on CD.
The sound of the recording is clean and the acoustic reflects that of the church in which it was made; also lifelike is the applause between items, an irritation that might profitably have been avoided.'
