Author: Jonathan Freeman-Attwood
Described in the booklet as “a 17th-century Jam Session”, “Apollo’s Banquet” explores the wonderful repertoire of English ballads and country dances which the publisher John Playford collected and published during the Interregnum and Restoration periods. Playford was a beady soul who knew his market, catching the public imagination in the easily assimilable didactic presentation of his publications and an acute awareness for growing musical fashion and influence. One trend favoured the violin, an instrument with a strong historical connection to dancing and which, in the reign of Charles I, also became associated with the more rarefied consorts of the esoteric 1620s. As professional players emerged, so the amateur tradition grew. Such a broad range of requirements gave rise to The Division Viol of 1659, which explored scordatura tuning, as well as expanding on Simpson’s idea of passaggi variation, and added simple, unfigured basses to original tunes.
David Douglass and his continuo battery – as distinguished a team as you will find in lutenist Paul O’Dette and the multifaceted harpist, Andrew Lawrence-King – draw the majority of their material from this source as well asApollo’s Banquet, a half-finished compendium of single-line tunes. Whilst these honest, contained and visceral melodies convey their message in the naked line, these are musicians who capture the flexibility of spontaneous-sounding arrangement, as the mood catches them. Douglass is a more modest virtuoso than, for example, Andrew Manze or Rachel Podger but he fairly rips through The Queen’s Jigg, and Moll Peatly is brilliantly judged. The problem in longer division-ground pieces is that without a more colourful palette of violin sound, in a largely limited harmonic world, the eloquence of the glistening ‘discants’ from the continuo players tends to take on a disproportionate role in the musical argument. That is a small gripe since this is committed playing, and there is a real knowledge and feeling for the idiom. The characterization of Long Cold Nights, justly crystalline and frosty, and The Glory of the Sun, is admirable.'
