This is the second volume exploring the orchestral output of Berne-born Volkmar Andreae (1879-1962), a figure better known for his career as a conductor. In his youth Andreae was evidently a gifted pianist and featured as the soloist in the Cologne and Vienna premieres (in July 1898 and June 1900) of his Piano Concerto and Konzertstück. Cast in three interlinked movements, the former lasts around 26 minutes and is full of undigested Schumann, Brahms, Grieg and Tchaikovsky. The craftsmanship is impressive for one so young, however, and both it and the comparably lyrical Konzertstück undoubtedly leave an endearing impression. Jump forward two decades to the Rhapsodie for violin and orchestra (1919-20) and there’s no missing the extra deftness with which Andreae handles his forces – and the thematic material has far greater personality, too. This really is a fetching discovery. The Violin Concerto (1935) displays an equally assured touch but rather fails to build on the promise of its brooding, harmonically searching opening pages.

These performances under Marc Andreae (the composer’s grandson) are unfailingly sympathetic, with commendably shapely contributions from pianist Fali Pavri and violinist Christian Altenburger, and some nicely turned playing by the Bournemouth SO. Truthful sound and balance, too. Inquisitive collectors can confidently investigate.
