Tons of pizzazz, with the jagged rhythmic mayhem occasionally giving way to a folksy-blues lyricism – the prime colours of almost all American brass chamber music. The best ‘street songs’ are those which unashamedly acknowledge West Side Story, including Bernstein’s own Dance Suite, his last published piece. Eric Ewazen’s derivative Colchester Fantasy rather takes the New World shine off the project.
