Author:
Was this really how religious music sounded nearly 900 years ago? I for one am prepared to believe it as I listen to such fine singing of these meandering medieval plainchant lines and the more musically complex Sequences. The group of Gothic Voices includes Emma Kirkby, Andrew Parrott and other early-music specialists and they have been beautifully recorded in an acoustic atmospherically suggesting ancient cloisters. The LP version won a 1983 Gramophone Award in the Early Music category and the Compact Disc catalogue is enriched by such a refined example of the work of this uniquely talented Abbess visionary whose ''friendship and advice were sought by popes, emperors, kings, archbishops, abbots and abbesses'', to quote from the booklet which gives the original Latin texts alongside English translations.'
