We catch up with the cellist as he releases a new recording of John Tavener's much-loved work
Sir John Tavener's The Protecting Veil was premiered at the BBC Proms 30 years ago by Steven Isserlis with Oliver Knussen conducting the BBC Symphony Orchestra (the subsequent Virgin Classics recording, with the LSO and Gennady Rozhdestvensky, won Gramophone's Contemporary Award in 1992). To coincide with the anniversary, a new recording has been issued by Signum Classics which finds Matthew Barley directing Sinfonietta Riga from the cello. James Jolly, who remembers that Proms premiere as a major musical experience, met up with Barley to talk about The Protecting Veil and the programme he's built around it for the new album.
