The BBC Proms has announced its festival programme for 2023. Running from 14 July – 9 September, this summer’s festival sees 15 new commissions and 24 of the proms broadcast on BBC television.
A stand-out complete performance of Berlioz’s The Trojans comes on 3 September, bringing this five-act opera back to the UK for the first time in over 10 years. It will be performed by the Monteverdi Choir and the Orchestra Révolutionnaire et Romantique under Sir John Eliot Gardiner with Alice Coote as Cassandra and Michael Spyres as Anaeas.
Straight from its performance at Glyndebourne, Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites arrives at the Proms on 7 August with Sally Matthews as Blanche de Force. The Glyndebourne Festival Opera will be joined by conductor Robin Ticciati and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Elsewhere, György Kurtág’s first opera, Endgame, receives its UK premiere at the Proms. An operatic version of Samuel Beckett’s play of the same name, it will be performed by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Chief Conductor Ryan Wigglesworth on 17 August.
The BBC Singers will perform at five Proms, including the First and Last Nights and a Late Night Prom, showcasing their broad range of repertoire. Soprano Lise Davidsen will take to the stage on the Last Night in a world premiere by James B. Wilson.
