The North London venue will present an opera from black classical composers
The Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC), named after the late MP, is a multi-art form venue and London’s only Black-led combined arts venue. Amongst their varied programme is Pegasus Opera Company’s Windrush, The Journey, an opera which honours the legacy of the Windrush generation. Presented through a fusion of classical music, steel pan, jazz and blues, Windrush, The Journey is a product of Black British composers Chevalier de Saint George, Richard Thompson and Des Oliver. Accompanying the concert is an exhibition of photographs and local Windrush testimony.
BGAC will also be marking Windrush Day on 22 June with an open air celebration, to include live-music, DJ’s and spoken word.
The Arts Centre will be holding their annual two-week Performing Arts Summer Camp as usual on 29 July. Aimed at 7-11 year-olds, the camp is curated to allow participants to explore new styles and techniques in music, dance and drama.
Speaking of the upcoming programme, the arts centre’s CEO and Artistic Director, Azieb Pool said, ‘At Bernie Grant Arts Centre we believe we need bold and brilliant arts and culture now more than ever…’ adding ‘…our upcoming programme has something for everyone.’
