Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of Laura Netzel’s 'Säg mig du lilla fogel' by mezzo-soprano Joanna Harries. The single is released today on CRD Records and will feature on her upcoming debut album Letters from Scandinavia with Sholto Kynoch. The album will feature little recorded and world premieres of 19^th century Lieder taking in Grieg, Stenhammer, Agathe Backer Grøndhal, Laura Netzel and Sibelius, interwoven with commissioned works from Peter Facer.

‘Säg mig, du lilla fogel’ is by Swedish composer Laura Netzel (1839-1927) who remains largely unknown, even in Sweden. The score for this song only exists, in a handwritten manuscript in the Swedish Music Heritage archives, and Joanna transcribed and transposed it for recording. It is published under the name "N. Lago" - the pen name that Netzel published under, presumably in a bid to stave off the kind of misogyny that being a female composer attracted.
