The song highlights the impact of family lineage on Brockless's music
Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of ‘My True Love’ by Adrian Brockless featuring violinist Victoria Barnes and soprano Elizabeth Adams. Brockless said: ‘My aunt Pauline Brockless asked me to set Sir Philip Sidney’s poem My True Love to music. Pauline enjoyed a stellar, but brief, singing career during the late 1950’s and 1960’s. She sang for Ralph Vaughan Williams (featuring in a recording made of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion made in 1958 a few months before RVW’s death) and at a number of proms for Sir Malcolm Sargent.’ He added: ‘Just before her death, Pauline asked me to ‘…Keep the Brockless flag flying.’ Perhaps this video is the answer ‘I'm doing my best.”
Family lineage has clearly shaped Adrian’s musical outlook, particularly his fascination with Renaissance choral traditions and classical influences like Olivier Messiaen, along with unexpected inspirations like Oasis and The Beatles. As a chorister at St Paul’s Cathedral, and later as Head Chorister at Guildford Cathedral, Brockless developed a deep love of music, moving from performance to composition. Brockless’ move to The Shetland Islands has introduced fresh inspiration, allowing him to explore new musical landscapes blending local folk traditions with his classical background.
