BBC Radio 3 announces new series celebrating 20th-century musical visionaries

Friday, March 21, 2025

The 40-part series ‘20th Century Radicals’ will spotlight composers who reshaped the musical landscape – alongside a major day of broadcasts honouring Pierre Boulez’s centenary.

BBC Radio 3 has unveiled 20th Century Radicals, a new 40-part series delving into the lives and legacies of composers who revolutionised classical music in the last century. Launching on Sunday 6 April at 9pm, the series is presented by Kate Molleson and Gillian Moore and takes inspiration from the centenaries of composers Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio.

Each episode focuses on a composer whose work challenged conventions, from Stockhausen and Sofia Gubaidulina to Pauline Oliveros and Julius Eastman. The first instalment explores Stockhausen’s Gruppen and the post-war cultural shifts that shaped Europe’s avant-garde.

In advance of the series, Sunday 30 March will be dedicated to Pierre Boulez, with a day of programming including live performances, expert commentary and specially recorded features celebrating the composer’s lasting influence. The day concludes with a BBC Symphony Orchestra concert from the Barbican, conducted by Martyn Brabbins and featuring Pli selon pli and Cummings ist der Dichter.
