Isata Kanneh-Mason: championing both Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn

The Autumn issue of International Piano features the young British pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason on the cover. She has recorded a Mendelssohn album – including Felix’s G minor Piano Concerto and Fanny’s little-known Easter Sonata – and talks to Jeremy Nicholas about life and music in a high-achieving family.

Other features this issue include a tribute by Charles Timbrell to the French pianist Gaby Casadesus, who died 25 years ago, as well as regular columns by Mark Ainley and Kenneth Hamilton.

George Li introduces his new album ‘Movements’, with works by Schumann, Ravel and Stravinsky, while Murray McLachlan continues his educational ‘Nuts and Bolts’ series by guiding us through the pitfalls of one of the essential building blocks of piano technique – scales.

In this issue’s Repertoire Guide, Richard Whitehouse offers an introduction to the piano music of Busoni, born 150 years ago this year, and recommends the best works and recordings to explore.

Our extended reviews coverage assesses a full range of recent piano releases, from a retrospective of Yvonne Loriod’s legacy on record to new solo and concerto albums, including Nigel Simeone’s round-up of new recordings that might otherwise escape your attention.

Finally, our live reviews encompass festivals in Verbier and Aldeburgh, as well as concerts in London and New York.
