Hungarian pianist András Schiff refuses to perform in the US during Donald Trump's presidency, citing moral and political concerns
Renowned pianist András Schiff has announced he will not perform in the United States for the duration of Donald Trump’s presidency, condemning what he describes as an era of 'ugliness' and injustice. In an interview with The New York Times, Schiff, expressed particular distress over the administration’s immigration policies, drawing parallels to his own family’s history of deportation during the Holocaust.
Schiff joins a group of classical musicians taking a public stand against Trump’s leadership, including German violinist Christian Tetzlaff and pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati. In an open letter, Schiff stated that 'arts and politics are inseparable' and that he 'cannot, in good conscience,' continue performing in a country where he feels fundamental values are under threat. Despite his deep ties to the US music scene, he has withdrawn from all engagements for the 2025-2026 season.
While Schiff acknowledges the difficulties of his decision, he remains hopeful for future change, urging artists to speak out against injustice.
