Elena Cobb, the publisher of EVC Music, introduces a volume of new compositions by women composers written in Homage to Chopin, all of which are accessible to intermediate-level pianists
On 18 September 2023, EVC Music presented its new piano collection 22 Nocturnes for Chopin by Women Composers at Steinway Hall in London. This anthology is the result of a worldwide search for talented but not-yet-published women composers that was initiated by the pianist Rose McLachlan and EVC Music in the autumn of 2022.
The applications for new piano works inspired by Chopin’s Nocturnes were open to women composers aged 14 and over. EVC Music received over 80 piano scores in a variety of styles ranging from nostalgically Romantic to more personally experimental.
The selection committee were presented with the scores without the composers’ names, and 16 were chosen in addition to six commissions by established composers. Each composer in this collection speaks in her own authentic voice, and the music stirs emotions and reveals each composer’s cultural influences.
Almost every Chopin piano work has a dedication to a woman, and this anthology of piano pieces written by women composers neatly completes the circle.
