On April 22, the musical world will celebrate the 100th anniversary of violinist Yehudi Menuhin’s birth. For Warner Classics, the occasion is being marked with a luxurious box of 80 CDs, 11 DVDs and a hardback, coffee-table book, collectively titled The Menuhin Century. Released on April 1, the set draws on the unequalled 70-year relationship between Menuhin – who died in Berlin in 1999 – and the record company HMV/EMI.

The discs span 53 years, from 1929 to 1998, and focus on landmark recordings as well as those never before released. The collection has been curated in close collaboration with Bruno Monsaingeon, a close friend of Menuhin, who directed several of the documentaries appearing on the set’s DVDs. Monsaingeon is also the author of the lavish 250-page book accompanying the recordings, which documents Menuhin’s rise to stardom through a series of personal anecdotes and beautiful photographs.

The set retails at approximately £150 – but for one lucky Gramophone reader it will be absolutely free!
