Watch: Tom Borrow plays Chopin's Polonaise-fantaisie

Friday, June 25, 2021

The newly-named BBC New Generation Artist recorded the work at this year's Rubinstein Virtual Piano Festival

Pianist Tom Borrow was among the musicians named among the new cohort of BBC New Generation Artists yesterday. A previous Gramophone One to Watch and signed to the Hanssler label, his debut album will feature Romantic solo piano works by Rachmaninov, Liszt, Franck, Scriabin and Chopin.

But ahead of both that and of the broadcast performances that will come as part of the BBC New Generation Scheme, here's a wonderful video of him playing Chopin's Polonaise fantaisie in A flat major, Op 61.

It was filmed earlier this year while the British-Israeli pianist was in Tel Aviv, where he gave a streamed recital from the Buchmann-Mehta School of Music's Clairmont Hall as part of the Rubinstein Virtual Piano Festival. The concert had featured the work, but feeling that he had more to say with the piece, Borrow returned the following morning to play and record it again - and this is the performance you can enjoy below.
