Atmospheric video marks the release of the cellist's new album on Orchid Classics

John-Henry Crawford took First prize in the 2019 Carlos Prieto International Cello Competition, a success followed by an impressive debut album for Orchid classics of music by Brahms, Ligeti and Shostakovich.

But it's that 2019 competition, held in Mexico, that lies behind his new album. 'Little did I know, the trip would transform my life musically,' says Crawford. 'At the time I was very well acquainted with Latin American music, but after having the great fortune of winning first prize and returning to Mexico multiple times for performances, I fell in love with the music of Latin America, the culture, the history, and the Spanish language.'

This new album, called Corazón, takes the listener on a musical tour, spanning 140 years of repertoire, through Argentina, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. And to mark its release, we've a video of him playing O Canto de Cisne Negro (Song of the Black Swan) by Villa-Lobos, performed with Victor Santiago Asuncion on piano.
