How In Harmony Opera North is transforming music education in the Belle Isle area of Leeds

Opera North is the only opera company engaged with the In Harmony initiative, and they have been bringing music to two schools in south Leeds: Windmill Primary School and Low Road Primary School. In the video below you can see the positive and inspiring impact that In Harmony Opera North is having on the lives of 650 school children. As part of the scheme, all pupils in Years 1-6 receive their own instrument and are invited to join an orchestra as well as a number of singing groups. The teachers are also being taught to play instruments as part of the scheme, as their enhtusiasm for music is a vital part of the process.

Andy Gamble, Executive Headteacher, Low Road and Windmill Music Federation, says: 'We have observed many significant effects on the pupils’ skills at Windmill such as teamwork, co-operation, social etiquette and self-confidence. It is my belief that the cultural enrichment provided by the In Harmony programme has had a direct impact on the positive learning culture and subsequently contributed towards improved results.'
