Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes plays the Furiante from his latest recording of the Dvorak Tone Pictures

Still on a high from his spectacular performance at the Gramophone Awards earlier this month, today we are celebrating the release of pianist Leif Ove Andsnes's latest album, Dvořák Poetic Tone Pictures. Out today on Sony Classical, Video of the Day sees Andsnes perform the wild Furiant from the Dvorak Tone Pictures.

The seldom-programmed Poetic Tone Pictures show a very different side of the composer best-known for his symphonies and string quartets. Composed in spring 1889, Dvořák’s cycle comprises 13 little-known pieces that signal a stylistic shift away from the formal constructions of his earlier instrumental writing towards a freer, more programmatic aesthetic.

Andsnes had previously only performed selections of the work, until delving deeper during the recent pandemic lockdowns and committing to performing and recording the set in its entirety. His recording of the cycle is out today on Sony Classical.
