Video of the Day: Jack Liebeck plays Ysaÿe

Exclusive session footage of the violinist, with pianist Daniel Grimwood, recording Poème élégiaque

'I always knew I would have to climb this mountain, and during the enforced solitude of the last 18 months it became clear that the time was right.'

So writes Jack Liebeck of recording Ysaÿe’s extraordinary Six Sonatas for Solo Violin, released today on Orchid Classics, and available to sample below via Apple Music.

But today's video is an excerpt of a Ysaÿe work that also appears on the album, from earlier in his career, his Poème élégiaque. Composed 1892-93, this beautifully lyrical, intensely Romantic work was dedicated to Fauré, and in turn inspired Chausson's Poème, written three years later. This session footage sees Liebeck joined by Daniel Grimwood on piano.
