An exclusive excerpt from a new collaboration between the Wallace Collection and Orpheus Sinfonia

Something more unusual from us to conclude the week: the Director of London’s extraordinary Wallace Collection Dr Xavier Bray explaining the art of Canaletto, followed by a performance from the Orpheus Sinfonia of music by the artist's 18th-century Venetian contemporary Vivaldi.

The video is taken from a new series exploring the connections between music and art, produced in a collaboration by the Wallace Collection and Orpheus Sinfonia. Five programmes, filmed during lockdown within the galleries of the Collection’s home, Hertford House, explore the styles, forms and compositions that unite four centuries of music with the celebrated paintings, decorative art and arms and armoury of the Wallace Collection.

It starts this Sunday, March 21 at 6pm with Canaletto and Vivaldi – and you can watch an exclusive excerpt below.

Each episode features introductions by Dr Bray, alongside Orpheus Sinfonia’s artistic team Thomas Carroll and Rosemary Taylor, followed by performances by members of the ensemble.

Later broadcasts are as follows: April 4, Rococo - Fragonard’s The Swing and Meissen vases explored alongside Rameau, Couperin and Gluck; April 19, Ceremony and Battle which explores the gallery’s arms and armour collection alongside fanfare music for brass quintet and percussion; May 2, Silent Witness which plays with the concept of paintings, furniture and music bearing witness to particular moments at Courts of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Marie-Antoinette. Finally, on May 16, the staircase in Hertford House will play host to a recreation of the premiere performance of Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll.

Tickets are £5, and can be brought from the Wallace Collection
